Tsubakiyama Gallery is pleased to present "2004-2020 Splendor · Cluster – Solo Clustering-Group Art Exhibition of Zhang Chaorui DaDa.Ryan" at the gallery’s exhibition space and online. The exhibition includes 17 installation photography works, 1 clustering-group installation work “Flame Swirl”, and 5 luminous works.
Originally created by artist Zhang Chaorui (DaDa.Ryan), clustering-group art is inspired by the mysteries of movable typography: clay engraving, ink coloring, arranging, and reverse printing, as well as inspired by the ethereal gestures of sea creatures dancing and swaying with the waves. Of the four elements, "cluster", "repetition" and "color" can be felt visually in the installation work, while "wobbling" is from both within and outside the work: the interchangeable combinations of clusters within the installation are constantly forming new images, and the viewer outside the installation is constantly capturing new scenes through changes in viewing angles.
The installation photography works in this exhibition were created by the artist in the midst of the 2020 COVID-19 epidemic; they are a continuation of his 2004 study of the viewing angle and visual changes in the five-direction façades. This time, the projection of multi-colored light is involved to explore the relationship between light and the façade that forms the image. The projection of light on small pieces of wooden blocks was illuminated by red, green, blue and white light panels arranged in the air, and subtle transitions were captured; when one of the multi-colored light was blocked out, the shade and hue drastically changed, generating a visually stunning experience no less than heavy-colored pigments.
Clustering-group art expresses the concept of collective standing, searching for linkage between light and shadow beyond the inherent colors, reflecting the invisible interactions and influences among individuals, and as an energy body, weaving the diversity of connections and sensations together, projecting to the splendid future space and time.
The exhibition will also feature the world's first clustering-group art work “Flame Swirl”, viewing from different angles to experience the warmth and empathy the flames bring to us.
